Discussion with Zhang Yiqun about the future of gallery associations

Writer / Hu Yongfen (Artist Issue 548, January 2021)

The Republic of China Art Gallery Association has entered its 29th year. It has gone through glory and led the art industry in Asia. It is indeed a relatively difficult time at this stage. Zhang Yiqun, the person in charge of Inheritance Art Center, is a senior in the industry. He has served as the chairman and vice-chairman of the Gallery Association. He has deep feelings and expectations for the Gallery Association; ) Historically, the September 21 earthquake in 1999 and the floods caused by Typhoon Nari in September 2001 had two crises of closure after the disaster. Zhang Yiqun raised his arms twice and shouted: "It cannot be closed, even if Taiwan's gallery industry Those who die in battle should also die on the battlefield!

At this time when the gallery association is facing another downturn, this magazine invites Zhang Yiqun, a passionate personality, to talk about the gallery association, which is about to enter its 30th year, and discuss its current situation and future development. (Note: The Gallery Association held the 3rd member meeting of the 14th session on December 21 to conduct the election of the new chairman and supervisors, and announced that the 15th chairman was elected by Zhang Yiqun from Heritage Art Center)

Hu: Continuing what you mentioned before, in recent years, some senior and excellent galleries have faded out or left, and some emerging excellent galleries have clearly expressed their reluctance to join the Association. The proportion of the three armed forces is increasing. Although it is not easy to say, it is close to the truth. This is also the key reason why the Art Association and Taipei Art Fair are gradually weakening and cannot be revitalized. For the industry association, of course, the whole will be good if the army is strong. What do you think in the future? What specific strategies should the Association use to win over these galleries?

Zhang: This is a very painful question. Although the Art Association did not exclude good galleries, they were too good and busy with development, and there was a bigger sky outside, so they had no time to review the association. The first generation was too busy, so it was handed over to the second generation. I came to participate in the association, but the new second generation is not familiar with everyone in the association, and I don’t have the revolutionary emotion that the previous generation walked with you. Therefore, I really hope that excellent galleries can come back and tell everyone how vast the sea and sky are outside. Share their hard work experience; although I can't speak for all the two armies and three armies, I have also heard their voices that "they abandoned us and left"; I have heard the voices of both sides, and I feel very painful. But I still hope that the more capable people will have a heart for public welfare, sacrifice a little time of themselves, bring back experience and opinions to share and lead everyone.

As for some outstanding young galleries you mentioned, they have higher ideals and aspirations, and they are eager to make a leap forward, but they don’t take into account the overall members of the association. The conditions put forward by the association are impossible to meet, such as insisting that Taipei Art Fair can only select 80 galleries. Participating in the exhibition, I think 100 companies are too many, and out of 80 companies, I need 40 companies from abroad and 40 companies from China. Think about it: for an association with 128 members, only 40 of them are allowed to participate, is it to let the rest be wiped out? This is impossible.

In 2014, when I was the chairman of the Taipei Art Fair, there were 150 exhibitors from home and abroad, and almost all the big galleries in Taiwan participated. In fact, the powerful domestic and foreign galleries will give the best and largest booths, so As long as there are enough good galleries from home and abroad to participate in the exhibition, the fair will be able to support more local galleries to participate in the exhibition without affecting the quality. The total turnover of that year was NT$1.18 billion, which should be the highest turnover in history. Ask us not to announce it, so as not to put pressure on the successor (Note: It has been verified by Shi Longsheng, the head of the Sanjing Research Office at the time, that it is true).

I hope that the new chairman of the art association elected this term can open his mind again, and try his best to negotiate and communicate with each gallery on different positions. There are only 40 good companies, how can we fight for the industry? It’s lonely to have a good gallery of your own. Of course, gallery associations have their own advantages and disadvantages when organizing expositions, but one of the biggest advantages is: because it is an association, even if the general environment is not good, all exposition companies will lose money and run away. Yes, the Taipei Art Fair will not stop, because the association has its own accumulated nutrients and capital, and only by persisting in doing so can it help the industry continue. The role of the association should be to unite everyone, lead the small with the big, and work together It is the market that goes to Korea, Singapore, China, Hong Kong, and the whole world.
