sincerely invites you to come! ", which gathers Lin Hongwen's works spanning forty years from 1980s to 2022, supplemented by a chronology of chronology, displays the diverse aspects of the artist's creative career in various media, and will help the audience to further understand Lin Hongwen The presentation of artistic vocabulary. Lin Hongwen's abstraction and simplification of "material appearance" may be defined by the academic term "abstract art" given by experts and scholars in terms of form, but this term is not enough to explain the inner essence of his creation. Understanding Lin Hongwen's work provides only fragmentary illustrations. The creator himself does not think that his works are abstract. On the contrary, each work is the result of a dialogue between the artist himself and the current environment and social phenomena that cannot be more realistic. ▌Chapters as Dreams: A Chronology of the Art of Lin Hong-Wen
The Chapters as Dreams: A Chronology of the Art of Lin Hong-Wen by Beyond Gallery is a collection of art by Lin across 40 years from 1980 to 2022, and it comes with a chronology illustrating the various media used throughout his career which will help The audience further understands the development of Lin's art vocabulary.
Lin extracts and simplifies the "material appearance" from the art vocabulary, which may perhaps be labeled and defined theoretically as "abstract art" by experts and scholars in form. Still, the term itself is not enough to interpret the quiddity of his art and provides only a fragmented description to the audience for his art. The artist himself does not see his art as abstract either. In fact, every piece of art is the authentic result of his dialogue with the environment and the social phenomenon in which he found himself .

The distance between us and art
What is art? What is art? Does art really need to be defined or explained? Such clichés make people in the circle disgusted and feel superfluous, but for audiences who want to get close to art but have never received professional training, this big question is unavoidable, especially in the face of increasingly complicated and various art. Formal contemporary art, to step into this field and take the first step, sometimes it is as difficult as reaching the sky. Even if there are more than one hundred million results in Google search, the help to understand or appreciate art is still limited.
Is it "abstract art"?
Facing the creation of artist Lin Hongwen, the audience may face such a dilemma. Staring at a canvas with no specific images at all, or a three-dimensional shape welded by iron sheets, or a spatial installation composed of ready-made objects, where should the viewer start "reading" and try to "interpret" What about the "things" created by the artist?
The "Chapter Hui Ruomeng - Chronicle of Lin Hongwen's Works Exhibition" held at the Non-Gallery collected Lin Hongwen's works spanning forty years from the 1980s to 2022, supplemented by a chronology of chronology to showcase the artist's creative career The diverse appearance of works in various media will help the audience to further understand the presentation of Lin Hongwen's artistic vocabulary.
After graduating from the National Taiwan University of Arts (now National Taiwan University of Arts), Lin Hongwen's creations have been presented in multiple and compound forms such as collage, painting, sculpture and space installation. In 1985, Lin Hongwen created "Kite", an outdoor performance installation. He used bamboo and transparent plastic sheets to make ten groups of 120x200 cm large kites. He and his friends tried to fly these bulky kites on the coast of Tainan, and a group of them were practicing The policeman couldn't stand it anymore, so they came to help. The crowd flew the huge plastic kite into the sky, and the artist took photos to record the process. This seemingly nonsensical and silly behavior, interacting with the natural environment through conscious actions, is an important starting point for the creator's artistic practice. In the era when "performance art" was not widely known to Taiwanese, Lin Hongwen's attempt was undoubtedly ahead of the times.
Crossing the divide between art and life
In Italy in the 1960s, a group of young artists picked up discarded everyday materials such as branches, metal, glass,
Cloth, stone, etc. are used as media for artistic creation. Italian art critic Germano Celant coined the term "Arte Povera" in 1967 to summarize and describe the artistic style and concepts of these young creators. Their aim is to get rid of and break through the shackles of traditional class-conscious "elegant" art, and to redefine the vocabulary and concepts of art.
Since the early 1990s, Lin Hongwen has been using a large number of sea drift bamboos (oyster racks destroyed by typhoons or huge waves) that he picked up on the coast of southern Taiwan to create. The work "Ti Zang" (2002) is a large-scale interactive installation that the audience can enter by using sea drift bamboo, combined with video and sound installations. The sea drift bamboo, which has been exposed to the sun, wind and sea water, has a gradual color from gray to dark gray on the surface, and the mottled rust patterns add a sense of time. "Fetal Zang" adopts the shape of a womb, adds the sound effect of the sound of water droplets, and instantly intercepts the eye expressions of the audience when they enter to watch, deriving the artist's original memory of the mother's body and his reflection on man-made manipulation of nature. This comes from the waste in the living environment, and through the artist's thinking and practice, it is transformed into a kind of sci-fi and thought-provoking artistic creation.
From sea drift bamboo to iron welding works, you can observe the trajectory of Lin Hongwen all the way. The sculpture made of welded iron sheets replaces the three-dimensional device composed of bamboo sheets and iron wires; compared with bamboo, iron sheets are more durable. In the environment and space, it bears the changes of time and climate. When watching Lin Hongwen's iron welding works such as "The Returning Saint" (2020), in addition to feeling the spatial confrontation between virtual and real, inside and outside, opening and closing created by him in shape, you should appreciate it carefully The surface texture created by the iron sheet after being tempered by fire is like undulating water patterns or rendered splashes of ink, waiting for the viewer to ponder carefully!
Paintings are more like Lin Hongwen’s diary and essays, which record his daily thoughts and feelings, but his thinking is too sharp and dense to use in the face of many ridiculous absurdities and errors in the real society. Any specific image depicts the indescribable surging emotions in his heart. Lin Hongwen's paintings are like five-character quatrains, expressing the deepest and widest artistic conception with very few words. It is like talking to a practitioner with profound Taoism. Viewers must use their strong imagination to try to understand the connotation that the artist intends to convey. Lin Hongwen used a large number of grayscale and earth tones in the painting, and used thick, light, deep and shallow rendering brushstrokes to present a large piece of water-like flowing picture, which sometimes looks like a haze in the mist and rain that obscures the vision of distant mountains. ("After Discussing Fang Fang", 2022), sometimes it looks like a coast in night fog, only the silent ink, accompanied by the sound of waves beating ("Heng Chang Fu Xin", 2021). However, the pictures he creates always deeply attract the viewer's attention, trying to see through the layers of mist behind the hidden truth?
The space in Lin Hongwen's paintings seems flat, but just like his sculptures, there are always gaps between the lines and the color field, which makes people yearn for a glimpse. There may be resonance and sparks between watching and being watched, but if not, there is no need to be disappointed. Who says art must be understandable? In the face of Lin Hongwen's works (or any works), all preconceived obsessions should be put aside, try to observe with your heart, let your thoughts arise spontaneously, and permeate the five senses at the moment, it is this vagueness like a mystery that is half-understood Divide the world, let art exude a fascinating quality, right?
